Kenyatta Wilson My Daddy's Records - New E-Zine

This September will mark the 5th anniversary of the death of my father, Jerry. To celebrate his life, I've decided to create an online magazine that will focus on his love of good, good music. I thought it'd be neat to feature unsigned, independent artists who are similar in style and sound to the featured artist every month. The inaugural issue will feature L.T.D., so if any of you know of a band out now who sounds like them, I'd appreciate if you could link me to them, so I can see if they sho… Continue

Kenyatta Wilson How I plan to use 2008 to improve in 2009

2008 was a sub-par year for me. My jewelry business was not financially viable, I discovered I had a chronic pain condition, I realized that I will never advance at my 9-5 despite earning a degree, and a host of other, smaller disappointments peppered my life here and there. Don’t get me wrong, 2008 wasn’t all bad news: my mom was able to finally help me out with the bills, we were able to keep our home, and one of my kids even made the honor roll (a big deal, trust me). There seemed to be more… Continue

Kenyatta Wilson Should Detroit Fail...

This post is directed to my fellow Detroiters, but if anyone has anything to add, feel free. Should the Big 3 fail, or any one of the 3 go bankrupt, the city will be devastated. I won't go over the intricacies and details about this, because frankly I don't feel qualified enough to. You don't have to be an economist to know that what I said is true, however. You just have to have eyes. So my question to my fellow Detroiters is this: should our auto companies fail, would you leave the city? Continue

Kenyatta Wilson My Mayor, the Jailbird

I got an IM from a friend today asking if I were watching the news. Considering the fact that I was at work, I of course replied with a smart-allecky remark. When he didn't immediately respond, I became alarmed and decided to I consult my trusty, dusty news source, CNN.com. I didn't see anything breaking there, so I went to my second source, ClickonDetroit.com. Ah, I see Mayor Kilpatrick is in the news. Actually, no so much in… Continue

Kenyatta Wilson Manic Monday: I feel crappy today, so I might as well tell you about a related project.

A few of you may already know this, but for those of you who don't, I have been struggling with an undiagnosed chronic pain condition. Since I don't have confirmation on what it may be (my primary doc thinks it may be fibromyalgia), I haven't been speaking about it much publicly. Since my symptoms have increased, however, I've decided to speak out. It is frightening not knowing for sure what's going on, and writing about it is therapeutic. I'd be honored if you'd walk along with me through my j… Continue

Kenyatta Wilson Frugal Friday: Bring your own grocery bags.

I didn't run across any money-saving tips in my email, so I have a pretty light tip today. I discovered while shopping at Kroger over the holiday that they give you a .5 discount on your grocery bill when you bring your own bags. I was headed to Trader Joe's, but they were closed, so I traipsed over to the big K. They were even Trader Joe's bags, but I still got the discount. It made my day. Continue
